Burgas
Gateway to the southern coast and Bulgaria's finest beaches
About the city
Burgas is the second-largest resort hub on the Bulgarian coast and the main transport gateway to the southern Black Sea. The city is known for its Sea Garden above the bay, a long sandy spit, and three surrounding lakes that draw pelicans and flamingos. The compact, walkable centre is full of street cafes, galleries, and fish restaurants.
For Ukrainians, Burgas works both as a final stop on summer routes and as an interchange for the southern resorts. Direct buses run from Kyiv and Lviv, with Sunny Beach, Nessebar, Pomorie, Sozopol, and Primorsko all close by. The route passes through Moldova and Romania, so an international passport is needed.
The beach season runs from May to September. Burgas is the most convenient base for the southern coast, where the beaches are wider and quieter than in the north, and tickets are cheapest when booked early.
